Queen Victoria Market Food Hall

SUMS supplied and installed decorative curved steel elements and structural metalwork as part of the Queen’s Food Hall renewal at Queen Victoria Market — one of Melbourne’s most iconic heritage precincts. The project, built by McCorkell Constructions, replaced the market’s ageing 1980s food court with a modern, characterful dining hall that celebrates the site’s industrial heritage.

Curved Steel at the Heart of Melbourne's Most Iconic Market.

The Queen’s Food Hall is a key component of the QVM Precinct Renewal Program — a major revitalisation of Queen Victoria Market aimed at modernising facilities while preserving the site’s heritage character. McCorkell Constructions engaged SUMS to deliver custom metalwork that would become one of the defining visual features of the new space. Situated in the heart of Melbourne, the project demanded both technical precision and a strong design sensibility.

SUMS fabricated and installed the decorative curved steel elements that serve as focal points within the food hall’s interior. Working alongside exposed heritage brickwork and a structural steel roof, these bespoke components needed to complement the industrial aesthetic while meeting the finish standards expected on a high-profile public project. A suspended concrete culvert planter — supported by custom steelwork — added a further layer of complexity to the scope.
