Custom Metal Fabrication & Window Shrouds
Sunbury Community Arts & Cultural Building
SUMS was engaged to supply and install custom metalwork as part of the adaptive reuse of the historic Sunbury Female Refractory Ward into a new community arts and cultural facility for Hume City Council. The project included window shrouds for the central community theatre and supporting metalwork across a 2,300m² heritage building in Sunbury, Victoria.
Heritage Meets Craft. Metal Work Built to Last.
The Sunbury Community Arts & Cultural Building sits within the Jacksons Hill Precinct, 35km north of Melbourne. Originally a 19th-century mental health institution, the former Female Refractory Ward has been sensitively transformed into a vibrant arts hub — housing a community gallery, 100-seat theatre, potters workshop, studios and creative workspaces. SUMS was brought in as part of the broader construction team to deliver custom metalwork that met the project’s exacting heritage and design standards.
The standout scope for SUMS was the supply and installation of custom window shrouds for the community theatre. Designed by Architecture Associates, these shrouds needed to deliver full blackout capability and improved acoustic performance — while remaining sympathetic to the heritage fabric of the original building. Working within an active heritage restoration project meant tight tolerances, careful coordination with other trades, and no margin for error on bespoke components.
